Am I Carrying a Cancer Susceptibility Gene?

If you have a family member who has had breast cancer, uterine or ovarian cancer, there are tests you should definitely have done.

BRCA Gene Tests

These are BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutation tests that can be checked from a blood test you provide.

Cancer Risks

If any of these gene tests come back positive, your cancer risks are as follows:

Women with BRCA1 gene mutation have a 35-70% risk of developing ovarian cancer (by age 70)

Women carrying BRCA2 gene mutation have a 10-30% risk of developing ovarian cancer (by age 70)

Preventive Measures

If the test is positive for any of these mutations, we recommend that women between 35-40 years of age have their uterus, ovaries and tubes removed as soon as they finish having children.

Emptying the inside of both breasts may be beneficial to reduce risk.

Important Information

In BRCA1 mutation, cancer appears 8-10 years later compared to BRCA2 mutation.
